Easy steps to make an excellent essay

In writing skill, essay is the most important thing that we have to know and understand. Essay is a group of paragraphs that develops one main idea. In writing an essay, there are three steps that we have to follow and write. They are developing and supporting your thesis, organizing your essay, and shaping your supporting paragraphs.

The first step is developing your thesis. Before the thesis is developed, we must know the meaning of it first. According to Pathways book written by Joyce M Jarret, Margaret Giles Lee and Doreatha D. Mbalia, “thesis is generally one sentence that states the main idea of the essay. Whether called the thesis, thesis sentence or thesis statement is usually placed early in the essay to provide a focus for the paper, guiding you as you write and letting the reader know what to expect”. It means that, when we make a thesis statement in our paragraphs, we can know the purpose of the paragraph itself.

Thesis statement tells about how the writer and the reader can focus on the sentences itself. And it can also develop and express your ideas when you are making a paragraph. Then you can comprehend your opinion or ideas when you write the sentence. The thesis statement itself has a characteristic, such as effective and ineffective thesis statement. Effective thesis statement is one that states one main idea in the paragraphs. Meanwhile, ineffective thesis statement is one that doesn’t state one main idea in the paragraphs. It means that, when we read the sentence in the paragraphs we can differentiate them, whether it is an effective or ineffective thesis statement.

For example, the effective thesis statement is “Blackberry is a famous mobile phone in Indonesia, which is made from Canada”. Meanwhile ineffective thesis statement is “Blackberry is a smart phone”.

The second step is supporting your thesis. If we get some difficulties when we are developing a paragraph, we can use some helpful ways, they are free writing, brainstorming, and asking question. These ways are the good strategies for developing the sentence. Free writing is the way for improving many feelings, usage, disadvantages or advantages.

For example, when we want to write or express about something, we can write sentence by sentence about what we want or feel about it and formed into a good paragraph. At this way, we can express our mind or soul for exerting what we feel, use, and want about something.

Besides, brainstorming is the way for searching and getting the example about the topic that what we want or feel. This way can show us about some words that related to the topic.

For example; if we have a topic like “sensitivity”, we can search some words that related with the topic. We can relate to emotion, feeling, sad, hurt, and angry. Then you can see that finding the words related to the topic is really easy by using brainstorming.

And the last is asking question. Asking question is the way for getting an information or answer about something by making some questions that related to the topic. For example; what can be done for solving the disaster in Padang? The answer is the government must build a new environment, give supports and do not make this disaster as a continuous problem or must be solved immediately.

The third step is organizing your paragraphs. This is the way for us to arrange the point of sentence about the topic and make the reader easily understand about the essay. When we try to organize the paragraphs, don’t forget to make a simple sentence that make easily to understand about what we write. Besides, when we are going to make a sentence, don’t make a difficult sentence that makes the reader hard to understand.

For example; when we have the topic, we must know about the cause and effect from the topic, because it is the important thing that we have to know for telling our topic. For example, free sex in teenager in Jakarta. It means that, we must know the cause and effect for improving our ideas, such as, causes are lacks of faith and social intercourse. It means that, we know the causes of free sex in teenager. Besides, the effects will damage their personal and family’s good names. It means that, we know that the effects of free sex in teenager. Then, if we know the causes and effects from that topic, it will be easy for us to organize the paragraphs and form into a good essay.

All of the steps from the explanation above will be helpful for us in making a good essay, if we want to try, know, and understand about them. When we try to make an essay with the good process and steps, then it can create a satisfying result and make the reader interested, easy to read and understand about our essays.
